Globe - 1960-1970

A particularly beautiful and richly detailed vintage illuminated globe by Scan-Globe A/S from Copenhagen, Denmark. A decorative and educational object with a pronounced Scandinavian design, finished with a relief map, internal lighting, and various geographical scaleings.

The globe has a diameter of about 30 cm and stands on an elegant, minimalist gray-and- off-white foot. Especially the combination of the colorful cartography with the sleek base makes this globe an attractive interior and collector’s item.

Relief map with extensive geographical details

One of the finest features of this Scan-Globe is the physical relief structure of the earth’s surface. Mountain ranges and other elevations are not merely printed but clearly three-dimensionally integrated into the surface. This creates a visually and touch-wise particularly detailed image of the Earth.

The oceans are also depicted in detail. On the map, among other things, ocean currents, sea streams, basins, ridges, and depth data are indicated. In the photos, for example, indications of the North Atlantic drift, sea currents, and various ocean basins are visible.

The map is Dutch-language, which makes this edition especially interesting for collectors in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Colorful vintage cartography

The countries are rendered in characteristic vintage hues such as orange, pink, green, yellow, and brown, against light blue oceans. The relief structure allows light and shadow to play across the surface, making the geographical shapes stand out even more.

In the detailed photos, Europe, Asia, India, Australia, Africa, North and South America, the Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean are clearly recognizable.

The cartography used also gives the globe a clearly historical character. Thus the object is not only decorative but also interesting as a time document of geographical and cartographic design from the second half of the 20th century.

Internal lighting

The globe is equipped with internal electric illumination. When the lamp is switched on, the globe is softly lit from the inside. The colors and geographic details gain a warm glow and the relief is further accentuated.

Thus the globe can be used both as a daytime decorative object and as ambient lighting in the evening.

The original white plug cord with inline switch is included.

Special base with scales

The globe rests on a striking designed gray/white stand. This base is much more interesting than that of a simple standard globe.

Directly beneath the globe is a cylindrical ring with multiple scales. In the photos, degrees and compass/direction indicators are visible. In addition, there is a large round rotatable scale at the front.

This technical design gives the globe an almost scientific or instrument-like appearance and suits the Scandinavian design of the period particularly well.

Day and night indicator

Above the globe, at the level of the North Pole, there is a distinctive round disc with numbers and symbols for the sun, moon, and stars.

This not only constitutes an interesting functional detail but also gives the globe a distinctive appearance compared to simpler vintage globes.
