An exquisite, handcrafted object of modern studio glass by the internationally renowned German glass artist Christian Schmidt (born 1958). Schmidt, who always signs his unique works by hand with his artist’s name "ChriSch", is known in the international art world as "the painter among glass engravers." His work is included in several prestigious collections, including the well-known Corning Museum of Glass in New York. This early masterpiece from 1991 is created with the intricate Überfang glass technique (Überfangglas), whereby multiple layered color strata are melted over one another. The background presents a splendid spectacle of deep blue and warm gold-orange glass powder melts. Around it, Schmidt has manually carved and engraved a fascinating, surreal story deep into the glass. The milk-white, matte engravings depict, among other things, a refined human profile in communication with bizarre fabled birds, rising figures with wavy hair, and finely worked, organic root structures at the base. This deep engraving creates an impressive three-dimensional relief effect and a unique incidence of light."
