Item Description
This is a Japanese cast iron kettle (chagama) used for heating water during the tea ceremony (chanoyu), signed by the maker Ryūgen 隆元. The kettle is of wide-mouth (hirokuchi) form, with a gently rounded body cast in a fine pine-tree pattern (matsu-jimon) that emerges softly beneath the dark iron patina. On either side of the body are ring handles cast in the form of demon faces (kimen kan-tsuke), a traditional decorative device associated with higher-grade tea kettles.
