Artist Biography:

Joan Descarga Aniento (1947) is a Spanish painter, visual artist, and educator closely linked to Barcelona. Although his official biography indicates Barcelona, 1947, there is a 1981 newspaper source that notes he was born in Zaragoza and moved to Barcelona at a young age.

He trained in Industrial Design at the Escola Massana and later earned a Doctorate in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. He built an extensive teaching career, lecturing at centers such as the Escola Massana, Elisava, the Escola Superior de Diseño Textil e Industrial of the University Ramon Llull, and, especially, the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, where he was a tenured professor in the Painting Department. In 2018 he was named the first Lifetime Honorary Professor of that faculty.

Artistic Career

His production is primarily situated within contemporary art of a conceptual, poetic, and introspective character. The Museu d'Art de Girona places his paintings and prints within a metaphysical and introspective abstraction, although many works feature figures and everyday objects treated in a blurred or symbolic way.

Descarga has developed painting, drawing, printmaking, and graphic work, in addition to experimenting with other media. Over his career he has produced more than fifty solo exhibitions and more than a hundred group exhibitions, both in Spain and abroad. He has exhibited in Barcelona, Girona, Madrid, Andorra, Paris, Venice, Sweden, and Italy, among other places.

Among his exhibitions, notable are Piel de Plomo (Galería René Metràs, Barcelona, 1989), Archives de la Mémoire (Paris, 1990), Pájaro de paso (Barcelona, 1992), Sombra Blanca (1995), Máscaras y Paradojas (1998), and De los límites (2000).

His work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Biblioteca Nacional de España, Museu d'Art de Girona, Museu d'Art de Sabadell, Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani, Patrimonio Artístico de la Universidad de Barcelona, and the Fundación “la Caixa,” in addition to international collections.

He has also developed significant theoretical and academic activity related to artistic creation. He is cofounder and editor of the contemporary art magazine BR::AC (Barcelona Research Art Creation) and author of various publications related to drawing, painting, and creative processes.

Currently his artistic research has oriented toward works related to the Vitruvian concepts “Firmitas, Utilitas et Venustas,” approaching the objet trouvé and Arte Povera.
