Johannes Wilhelmus Manders was born on December 7, 1936 in the Brabant town of Stiphout. From a young age his love of drawing and painting was evident, and it was natural that he pursued a training in L.O.-handtekenen (manual drawing). He then enrolled at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. In Tilburg he later earned the MO certificate in handwork and drawing. Jo Manders was a painter, draftsman and sculptor working in an abstract, later in an illusionistic-realistic style. He was influenced by Har Sanders and his painting of the interior of the Speelhuis hall in Helmond (unfortunately burned down). These paintings create the illusion that the depicted scene is real. Manders played with space and depth. A painted canvas placed for a performance gives some of these works the character of trompe l’oeil. His subjects included abstract compositions, realistic still lifes, and old walls. In addition, the insect world was a particular source of inspiration for him. In later years he worked a lot with masks and signs from African cultures. Throughout his artistic career he continued teaching in secondary education. In the eighties he won the bronze medal at the European Prize for Painting in Ostend. Jo Manders died in a tragic manner. On the evening of Wednesday, March 1, 1995, he and his sister were stabbed to death in her house in Helmond.
