Rare and fascinating first and only edition, Milan 1637, of one of the most original Italian treatises of the Seicento dedicated to the relationships between music, mathematics, human voice, poetry, and Pythagorean numerology. Teodato Osio undertakes a surprisingly modern enterprise: to demonstrate that spoken language itself possesses its own music, governed by numerical relationships analogous to those governing musical intervals. Rhythm, accents, syllables, verses, consonances, and modulations of the voice are subjected to an elaborate arithmetic analysis, turning musical theory into a tool for understanding poetry and language. The iconographic and scientific apparatus is extraordinary, with a copper-engraved allegorical frontispiece and numerous folded plates devoted to proportions, intervals, diapason, diatessaron, and numerical relationships among sounds. A singular book that unites the history of music, mathematics, poetry, and language theory.

Numerous folded scientific plates with geometric, numerical, and musical diagrams, as well as schemes and notations in the text. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
The work was produced in the midst of the seventeenth-century investigations into the mathematical nature of sound and the relationships between harmony, proportion, and human affections. Osio resumes the Pythagorean tradition, according to which musical intervals can be expressed by numerical ratios, extending it to spoken voice and poetry. Prose and verse thus become harmonious structures potentially measurable. The treatise addresses vocal and instrumental music, consonances, intervals, tempo, mathematical proportions, and metrics, then applying its principles to Latin and Italian poetry. From it emerges a singular seventeenth-century attempt to construct a true mathematical science of the word.

BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR – A “MOST SINGULAR THINKER”
Teodato Osio (Milan, 1605–1673) was a man of letters, theorist, and lawyer, belonging to a well-known Milanese family and embedded in the city’s cultural life. He cultivated exceptionally broad interests: poetry, literature, mathematics, music, numerology, and philosophical speculation. A considerable portion of his output remained in manuscript and is preserved at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, of which he was a benefactor. Giovanni Pozzi described him as a “most singular thinker,” while Benedetto Croce took an interest in his numerical speculations. L’Armonia del nudo parlare was his first published text and the only book he printed in Italian.

PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION – FIRST AND ONLY EDITION
The Milanese edition of Carlo Ferrandi from 1637 is identified by specialist sources as the first and only edition. Circulation appears extremely limited: a bibliographic census notes barely 23 copies preserved in major institutional collections in Europe and the Americas. RISM lists the work among printed writings concerning music, while the Utah University copy is described with a copper-engraved frontispiece, nine folding plates, and two small engraved plates. The presence of the work in the major specialist collections testifies to its particular importance in the history of seventeenth-century music theory.
