Fish 2 by Piotr Wrona is an expressive, strongly stylized composition depicting a fantastic sea creature against a background of a dynamically painted, intensely blue sea. The artist moves away from realistic representation of nature, building his own distinctive vision of the fish, in which the organic form is combined with the language of contemporary decorative art, geometric structuring, and painterly expressiveness.

The central part of the painting is occupied by a large, left-facing fish with an extraordinarily characteristic silhouette. Its attention is drawn to the enormous, round eye, placed in a light, almost white area of the head. A distinct pupil and concentric rings around the eye give the creature a slightly fairy-tale, surprising character. The lower part of the head is closed by a wide-open mouth with a row of sharp, triangular white teeth. The combination of a large eye, teeth, and highly simplified shapes makes the fish simultaneously funny, a little predatory, and very expressive.

The body is divided into numerous clearly defined color fields. Beside greens, turquoise, and navy appear reds, oranges, purples, white, and dark navy-black areas. The individual fragments do not form a single, realistic anatomy, but resemble a colorful mosaic. The central part of the torso has a particularly decorative character, where the artist employs a repeating scaly motif — rows of bright red and orange arches on a dark background. The regularity of this pattern contrasts with the freer, painterly parts of the remaining body fragments.

On the fish’s back there is a large red fin whose elongated, rounded shape stands out strongly against the blue water background. Above the body is also a decorative fin with alternating bands in intense shades of purple, orange, and red. The lower parts of the fish are complemented by additional fins in turquoise, navy, and red, giving the silhouette rhythm and a sense of movement.

The most striking element of the composition is the large tail on the right side. It is treated almost ornamentally: its orange surface is broken by turquoise, blue, purple, and red brushstrokes. The combination of these colors and the directionality of the brush lines make the tail seem to remain in constant motion. It contrasts with the more compact and geometrically divided construction of the trunk.

An important role in the painting is played by the background. The entire space is filled with horizontal, irregular brushstrokes of paint in shades of blue, turquoise, navy, white, and black. Layered, sometimes rough and rubbed brush marks create the impression of moving water, its reflections, and varying depth. The background is not merely a neutral setting for the fish — it is an active element of the composition and strengthens its dynamism.

A characteristic feature of the work is a strong contrast between the cool tone of the surroundings and the warm colors used in the fish’s silhouette. The blues and turquoises dominating the background are broken by intense reds, oranges, greens, purples, and white. This makes the fish’s figure clearly stand out from the surroundings while remaining colorfully linked to it.

The composition has a distinctly decorative and contemporary character. Geometric divisions, strongly defined contours, simplification of forms, and the pairing of seemingly non-obvious colors give it features of modern art and artistic illustration. At the same time, repetitive patterns on the fish’s body and the ornamentally treated tail recall mosaic, collage, and hand-made patterns.

The painting’s texture also plays a significant role. Visible brushstrokes, short and long strokes of paint, rubs, and the layering of successive coats build the materiality of the canvas surface. This gives the work a spontaneous, handmade character and avoids the impression of a composition created purely with flat, mechanically defined fields. The texture is especially pronounced in the background and in the tail and individual color fragments of the fish.

Fish 2 is thus a fusion of fantasy, expressiveness, and decorative color thinking. The artist transforms a simple fish motif into a colorful, almost fairy-tale construction in which anatomy is subordinated to the rhythm of spots, lines, patterns, and contrasts. A large eye, teeth, intense color palette, and a dynamic tail give the depiction a unique and easily recognizable character.
