Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK:
The Painting and the Artist
A precious oil on canvas painting from the early 20th century (circa 1910-1920), depicting the intense subject "Boy with Basket". The work is a fine original piece by the French master Jean-Charles Millet (Paris, 1892 - Dachau, 1944). Exposed and published.
The painting execution demonstrates excellent academic technique, heir to the great tradition of the Barbizon school (of which his grandfather, the famous Jean-François Millet, was a pioneer). The canvas vividly and richly captures a rural everyday-life genre scene, enhanced by the plastic rendering of the basket, the drapery of the garments, and a warm enveloping light.
Historical note on the author: The figure of Jean-Charles Millet is among the most fascinating and controversial of the 20th century. A painter of undeniable talent, he became famous in the art market for the "fake scandal": he produced numerous works passing them off as masterpieces of his grandfather (a story to which the Getty Center dedicated an exhibition). His life ended tragically with deportation and death in the Dachau concentration camp in 1944. This painting, proudly signed with his name ("J. Ch. Millet" in the lower right corner), is a genuine work, combining undeniable aesthetic quality with exceptional historical-biographical value.
Documentation: 1) Certificate of Authenticity from Galleria d'Arte Piero Della Francesca. 2) Photo copy of the publication (ATTENTION: the image of the catalog is published for documentary purposes only; in the sale, only the photocopy of the publication is included; the catalog is NOT included).
Conditions:
Canvas and Surface: Excellent condition. The back of the work is entirely contemporary and intact in its original mounting on an antique frame. No damage, no signs of restoration or repainting. The painting surface enjoys a pleasant, uniform patina due to time.
Frame: The painting is enhanced by an important and beautiful antique frame in wood and plaster gesso, carved and gilded. The frame shows slight defects and normal signs of time that enhance its authentic charm. (Sold as is; the photographic gallery is an integral part of the description).
