Important and rare first edition of the Medical Consultations of Giuseppe Del Papa, famous Tuscan physician, court physician (archiatro) of the Court of Tuscany and public lecturer in medicine at the University of Pisa.

The work constitutes a significant testimony to Italian medicine between the 16th and 18th centuries and gathers a wide series of consultations and clinical observations by the author, relating to different pathologies and physical conditions, through which the medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic conceptions of the time emerge. It also collects numerous medical consultations, often presented in the form of detailed clinical cases, in which the physician examines symptoms, the patient’s constitution, the evolution of the disease, and the remedies deemed appropriate according to the medical knowledge of the period.

Giuseppe Del Papa (Empoli, 1648 – Florence, 1735) was one of the most authoritative figures in Tuscan medicine of his time. After teaching at the Pisa Studio, he became physician to the Medici court and archiatro of the Court of Tuscany, succeeding some of the most important physicians of the Florentine milieu. He was also a member of the Accademia della Crusca and of several literary and scientific academies.

The collection of consultations was published in Rome in 1733 thanks to the editorial activity of Giovanni Gaetano Bottari, who had personal and professional ties with Del Papa. The 1733 edition is considered the first publication of the collection; subsequent posthumous editions followed, such as that of 1751

Binding

A copy in full contemporary rigid parchment, with sober boards and an elegantly decorated spine with small gilt tooling, divided by ornamental raised bands and with a red morocco label bearing the title of the work

Condition

The copy is generally in excellent condition
Pages show minimal scattered foxing. The paper, however, remains generally well preserved and reading the text is easy.
