Gabriel Barrat (France, 1879) – “Mediterranean,” 1940

Beautiful watercolor and gouache on paper representing a Mediterranean landscape animated by a wide bay, probably on the French Riviera, near Cannes.

The work stands out for a luminous palette dominated by blues, greens and ochre tones, as well as for a loose, expressive brushwork reminiscent of the French post-impressionist tradition of the early 20th century.

The work is signed, titled and dated at the bottom center: “Mediterranean / Gabriel Barrat / 40.”

On the reverse also appears a label bearing the stamp of Gabriel Barrat’s workshop, with his workshop address in Caudéran-Bordeaux, a particularly interesting element for the identification and provenance of the work.
