Antique iron nutcracker with lion heads – ca. 1860–1900 – Victorian

A particularly beautiful antique iron nutcracker from the second half of the 19th century, presumably manufactured between circa 1860 and 1900. A sturdy household tool that, due to its pronounced figurative design, has now become primarily a superb collectible.

The showpieces are the powerfully modeled lion heads on either side. The heads are rendered in high relief, with an imposing facial expression, full manes, and above them a crown-like ornament. Even from the side, a great deal of attention has been given to the modeling.

On the inside are the characteristic ribbed jaws in which the nut is clamped. By pressing the two long, slightly curved handles toward each other, the lever action is created to crack the shell.

Such figurative metal nutcrackers were in the 19th century not only practical household items but often acquired a striking decorative character. Lions, human faces, and other historical or symbolic figures were popular motifs. It is precisely the combination of an everyday function and richly worked sculptural decoration that makes these early specimens beloved by collectors today.

Condition:
For its considerable age, the nutcracker is in a beautiful authentic condition. The metal shows a dark patina, discoloration, and normal signs of use and aging that suit the 19th-century character perfectly. The relief details are still clearly present and the hinge is complete.
