Some descriptive elements:
"This is a journey into history, through the meanders of the 9th to the 13th centuries, a journey of atmosphere, an epic of ambiance and stone, a narrative in images built around faith, respect… Not far from Siem Reap, in the heart of the jungle, tower the temples of Angkor, one of the vastest archaeological complexes in the world: several tens of square kilometers brimming with towers, spires, edifices, moats, thousands of statues, bas-reliefs and countless temples cloaked by lush vegetation… A pilgrimage site walked with objective in hand by Steve McCurry, a Magnum photographer, to deliver here images in color fully immersed in a kind of wondrous dream. Sanctuaire is nothing less than a fairy tale, that of a sculpture captured in close-up, that of blocks of stone overwhelmed by the weight of water, that of arches, paved alleys, that of temples sketched as a whole. But these places oriented toward the past carry their share of life, traversed by monks in saffron robes who retired there, the surrounding farmers, the pilgrims who come to pray. Matte paper and glossy paper, faces and architecture share this superb album aimed, from page to page, at the permanence of a magical place with religious, royal, or funerary function… --Céline Darner
Steve McCurry has offered an unprecedented look at one of the most impressive monuments in the world, the Angkor temples in Cambodia. His stunning images describe a magical world where sculpted gods, eroded masonry, lush vegetation, and saffron-robed monks coexist.
Angkor was the capital of the Khmer rulers from the late 9th century to the mid-15th century. Each of them built a state temple surrounded by walls, moats, and dikes that perfectly matched the cosmology.
Elevated to the rank of UNESCO World Heritage, these temples attract tourists, archaeologists and art historians while remaining an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists.
Steve McCurry first visited Angkor at the request of National Geographic. He has returned there several times to draw a striking portrait of the buildings, sculptures, and inhabitants of Angkor.
Seven consecutive trips allowed Steve McCurry to become invisible to the saffron-robed monks and fruit vendors who wander before his lens, across 300 square kilometers of Cambodian land dotted with sacred stones. Angkor? We want more!
Unique, colorful, unpublished and magnificent copy, always timeless!
