Portuguese Art Deco Silver Brooch with Pearl and Gold-Tone Details, circa 1920
A beautiful and highly distinctive Portuguese silver brooch, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1915–1930, designed in the elegant transitional vocabulary of late Art Nouveau and early Art Deco jewellery.
Measuring approximately 5.5 cm in length and weighing 5 grams, this is a particularly refined and wearable jewel, distinguished by its elongated, flowing composition and delicate combination of silver, warm gold tones and pearl.
The brooch is formed as an elegant horizontal composition of stylised foliage and sinuous scrolling forms, with finely worked open areas and contrasting darkened recesses that emphasise the relief and give the silver considerable depth.
At its centre is a lustrous pearl, beautifully positioned as the focal point of the design. Its form and appearance is consistent with a natural pearl.
The pearl is framed by two graceful gold petal-shaped elements, creating a striking contrast with the silver decoration surrounding them.
The elongated silver elements are further embellished with numerous tiny faceted stones, carefully arranged in continuous decorative rows. Their lively reflections complement the silver and contribute considerably to the jewel's sparkling appearance.
