The expanding concentric circles are the central event of the painting; they speak of a body offered to the world rather than turned inward. The dense forest, the deep reflected greens, the moss on the stone in the foreground compose an Arcadia without mawkishness. It is a secular baptism scene, a return, where the vulnerability of the offered back is a declaration of innocence.
