In the upper left, on a red-and-white checkered tablecloth, three isolated objects: a pear, a banana, a pepper mill — an absurd inventory laid out as a signature. Semiotically, the canvas mirrors its own program: the reader has stepped away from the book to enter the state that the book describes, and the incongruous still-life corner is precisely the image of this shift. The ochre sand, the cool stripes, the brilliant plaid articulate three textures in a smooth, fleshy finish, where the rendering of skin cites the great tradition of the reclining nude.
