Semiotically, the levitation dispenses the scene from all plausibility, leaving only the structure: two worlds apart — shadow and light, here and across — sutured by a single gesture. The birds function as the chorus of this impossibility made natural. The palette, reduced to warm gold and Prussian blue, propels the painting toward visionary romanticism; the brushwork, thick and rubbed, lets the grain of the canvas surface touch the skies.
