Teejo - Miss Prue – Rock’n’Rebel

This contemporary work by Teejo revisits the portrait of Frances Abington as Miss Prue, painted in 1771 by Joshua Reynolds. Originally, this painting depicted the beloved actress Frances Abington in the role of Miss Prue, an ingénue and comic heroine of William Congreve’s Love for Love (1695). Considered at one time an exhibition portrait, it would actually be a private commission imbued with a gentle provocation, where the actress poses in an attitude that is both intimate and troubling for the era.

In this bold rereading, Teejo injects a dose of modernity and rebellion. Miss Prue becomes a rock icon: leather jacket, Pink Floyd T‑shirt, visible tattoos, bright lipstick, and a retro hairstyle twisted with a bandana. Even her little dog, a faithful companion, sports a pop style with violet glasses. This humorous, anachronistic détournement unsettles the classical codes to better bring the pictorial heritage closer to today’s public.

Between homage and irreverence, Teejo transforms artistic heritage into a mirror of our time, with a touch of derision and a resolutely intergenerational aesthetic.
