Large Antique Brass Ship’s Compass – C. Olsen, Grimsby – Gimballed – Working – 5.6 kg
Impressive and substantial antique brass marine compass by C. Olsen, Grimsby, presented in its original gimbal mounting and retaining a beautiful, untouched maritime appearance.
The compass comes from the collection of a Dutch collector who worked in the shipbuilding industry in Cork, Ireland, during the 1970s. According to the provenance supplied with the piece, he acquired the compass there, brought it back to the Netherlands, and kept it in his collection for many decades.
This is a large and very solidly constructed navigational instrument, weighing approximately 5.6 kg. The compass retains its glass cover, compass card, gimbal rings and associated fittings. The dial bears the maker’s name C. Olsen, Grimsby.
The compass is functional and the card responds to changes in direction. Its substantial size and heavy construction are consistent with use as a professional marine instrument aboard a seagoing working vessel.
The brass surface shows a rich natural patina, oxidation, scratches, small marks and other traces of genuine age and maritime use. These have intentionally been left untouched and contribute greatly to the authentic character of the piece.
