Suggestive head of Medusa in terracotta, made in Italy between the late 19th and early 20th century, characterized by a strong plastic presence and a deliberately dramatic imprint.

The face of the Gorgon is molded with idealized yet intensely expressive features: a lowered gaze, heavy eyelids and a slightly opened mouth convey an expression suspended between pain, restlessness and menace, far from the purely decorative representation of the subject.

Particularly noteworthy is the rendering of the coiffure, composed of a complex interweaving of individually modeled serpents that coil around the head, creating a sculptural mass that is dynamic and rich in overlapping elements. The sinuous shapes of the reptiles contrast with the more compact structure of the face, enhancing the disturbing character of the work.

The surface presents a warm brown-red tonal range, with chromatic variations and traces of the workmanship that give the terracotta a material and lived-in appearance. Some imperfections, abrasions and missing parts are visible, compatible with the nature of the material and the period of the work.

The composition unfolds as a true sculptural bust, with the neck emerging from a circular base, a solution that emphasizes its ornamental purpose and allows the sculpture to be appreciated also as an autonomous furnishing element.

The subject of Medusa, among the most powerful in the classical imagination, assumes here the double meaning of apotropaic image and representation of the myth's terribleness: the Gorgon's gaze, capable according to tradition of petrifying anyone who crossed it, becomes a metaphor for fear, death, and the destructive power of beauty.
