【Product details】

This refined pair of Japanese sword hilt fittings consists of a matching fuchi and kashira, crafted during the late Edo period. The design depicts elegant wild geese flying above reeds by the water’s edge, rendered in subtle relief carving with delicate gold inlay accents.

The fittings are made from shakudō, a traditional Japanese alloy prized for its deep bluish-black patina. The surface is finely worked in nanako, a highly sophisticated metalworking technique in which countless minute raised dots are individually punched into the surface using a specialised chisel. Achieving such a perfectly even texture required exceptional concentration and craftsmanship, and was considered one of the highest expressions of Edo-period sword fitting artistry.

Wild geese are a traditional seasonal motif in Japanese art, often associated with autumn, travel, perseverance, and elegant movement through nature. Combined with reeds swaying beside the water, the composition evokes a quiet poetic atmosphere characteristic of classical Japanese aesthetics.

The kashira features a particularly fine nanako surface with understated gold details, while the fuchi displays a flowing waterside scene with reeds and geese extending around the rim. The understated black shakudō surface and restrained gold decoration create a refined and sophisticated appearance.

The set comes in a fitted paulownia wood storage box believed to date from the Showa period.

There is age-related wear, and minor rubbing to the surface consistent with age and use. The interior of the fittings also shows age-related wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
