Tea caddy/ box - Lacquer (Urushi), Wood - Maple & Cherry Blossom

Item Description
This is a "Chu-natsume" (medium-sized natsume) tea caddy for usucha (thin tea), created by Kitamura Kishun, a lacquer artist based in Kyoto. The lustrous black lacquer finish is characteristic of Kyo-nuri (Kyoto lacquerware), and a design of autumn maple leaves and cherry blossoms is rendered in fine detail using gold maki-e and colored lacquer. By combining leaves depicted in outline only with leaves filled in gold and reddish hues, the piece achieves an elegant, seasonally evocative appearance, making it suitable both for use in the tea room and for decorative display.

This piece was used and stored at an Urasenke tea ceremony school. We recommend examining the photographs carefully for details regarding condition and technique.

An accompanying tomobako (wooden box) is included.
