Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a formal black tomesode kimono, a traditional Japanese silk garment traditionally worn by married women at ceremonial occasions such as weddings. The kimono is crafted from silk with a smooth, lustrous weave typical of formal tomesode fabric.
Three white family crests (mon) are woven into the fabric at the shoulders and center back, a hallmark of formal kuro-tomesode kimono. The hem is decorated with an elaborate design combining peonies, chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, and cranes alongside a long-tailed phoenix-like bird rendered in soft coral, gold, teal, and cream tones against the deep black ground. A small red seal mark is visible near the hem on the interior panel, consistent with a maker or workshop stamp, though the inscription has not been identified.
The kimono is fully lined, with a white or cream-coloured inner layer visible when the garment is opened, as shown in the photographs. Decorative purple cord tassels are attached to the sleeve edges for display purposes.
Size
Length: 160.5 cm
Width, including sleeves: 133.5 cm
Weight
1400 g / 1.4 kg
Condition
The kimono is in overall good vintage condition, consistent with careful storage. A faint yellowish discolouration is visible on the white inner lining near the sleeve opening, as shown in the close-up photograph; the outer silk face and the decorative hem design show no notable staining or damage. No tears or repairs were observed during visual inspection.
