Item Description

This is a vintage kuro-tomesode, a formal black silk kimono traditionally worn by married women at weddings and other ceremonial occasions in Japan. The garment is dyed in a deep, solid black (rokushoku) and bears five white family crests (kamon) — one on each sleeve, one on the back collar area, and two on the chest — a mon configuration reserved for the most formal tomesode.

The hem design is richly decorated with a flowing composition of gold-ground folding fans (ogi) filled with irises, pine, and plum blossom motifs, set against a stylised river of orange and green with rolling wave patterns along the base. Cascading wisteria (fuji) blossoms and pine branches with plum flowers complete the design, all rendered in gold thread, silver thread, and multicoloured silk embroidery-style dyeing (yuzen with gold accents). This combination of auspicious motifs — pine for longevity, plum for resilience, wisteria for elegance, and fans for good fortune — is typical of high-quality ceremonial tomesode from the mid-to-late Showa era.

The kimono is fully lined and finished with a white undercollar (haneri-style lining visible at the inner collar), consistent with traditional tomesode construction.

Condition
The silk is in generally good condition with vivid, well-preserved gold and coloured dye work on the hem design. Close inspection of the plain black upper body reveals some faint surface marks and light discoloration consistent with age and storage; no tears or major staining were observed. The garment has not been professionally cleaned or restored prior to sale.
