Marcus Kiel is a photo and installation artist from Bochum. His works bridge the distance from past times to the here and now, and they bridge the gap between the once-common world of the sword-making industry and the Home Office and information-technology generation. His photographs from the series 'Revier' depict life at a coal mine. But the rust that gnaws forward and becomes part of the image makes a process visible. One thing disappears into history, the other asserts the present.
His works thus gain a strong emotionality that stands apart from the hermeticism of ordinary photography. History becomes tangible, the world of the mines retains its soul.
Marcus Kiel studied art from 1990–1992 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. His works on the history of the Ruhr area and on Jewish history can be admired in numerous museums and collections, including in Chile and Ukraine.
