Handmade copper Dora gong from Japan, model Dora 銅鑼; approximately 100–150 years old, weight 2.2 kg, physical condition good, functional condition tested and working, includes a wooden mallet and hanging cord (not original).
Description from the seller
This is an antique Japanese dora (銅鑼), a traditional Japanese metal gong, estimated to be approximately 100–150 years old.
One of the most distinctive features of this example is its particularly thick and substantial body. The gong has a strong, solid presence, and its considerable thickness can clearly be appreciated from the side.
Both the front and reverse surfaces display characteristic concentric circular lines, deliberately formed in the metal. These regular circular lines create an interesting visual rhythm across the broad surface of the gong and are an important feature of this piece.
The surface has developed a naturally aged appearance over many years. There are variations in colour, oxidation, surface wear, small marks and areas of unevenness throughout. These traces of age give the gong a distinctly old and rustic character rather than the appearance of a newly polished or restored object.
The gong is accompanied by a wooden mallet and a hanging cord. The mallet and cord appear to have been added or replaced at a later date and are therefore offered as accompanying accessories. They are not claimed to be original to the gong.
A dora (銅鑼) is a traditional Japanese percussion instrument made from metal. Gongs have been used in Japan in various settings, including Buddhist and religious ceremonies, traditional performing arts, tea ceremony and other ceremonial or signalling purposes.
In particular, the resonant sound of the dora has traditionally been associated with the tea ceremony and religious or ceremonial environments, where its deep sound could help signal transitions and create a calm and contemplative atmosphere.
This example is especially interesting for its unusually substantial thickness, broad rounded form, distinctive concentric circular lines and naturally aged surface. The contrast between the smoother areas and the more textured, weathered areas of the metal gives the surface considerable character.
The gong retains the visual traces of its long history rather than having been heavily polished or restored. For collectors of Japanese antiques, traditional musical instruments, or objects connected with Japanese religious and cultural traditions, it offers an attractive example of an old Japanese dora with a strong sense of age and presence.
With its unusually thick and substantial body, distinctive concentric circular lines and naturally aged surface, this dora has a particularly strong presence. It is a characterful example of an old Japanese gong, retaining the marks of age and traditional workmanship that make antique objects so appealing.
