The yacht Defender was, during the 1895 America's Cup, the American defender opposed to the British challenger Valkyrie III of the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes.
The plans for Defender were drawn by American architect Nathanael Herreshoff in 1895 on commission by William Kissam Vanderbilt, Edwin Dennison Morgan and Charles Oliver Iselin.
The construction was carried out by the Nathanael Herreshoff Company shipyards.
It was, after Vigilant, the second Defender designed by Herreshoff to win the Cup.
Skippered by Henry C. Haff, it won the qualification regattas against the former defender Vigilant.
It then won the competition against the British challenger Valkyrie III.
After the competition, it was towed to New Rochelle where it did not sail for 4 years.
It was put back into activity for the 1899 America's Cup qualifications against Columbia.
