Georges Lapchine was born in 1885 in Moscow and studied from 1900 at the Stroganov School, before he went to Paris from 1906 to 1909, where he trained with F. Cormon and J. Lermitte. After returning to Moscow in 1910 he participated in the Salon des Indépendants and from 1911 to 1917 was founder and regular participant in their exhibitions. The political events of 1917 forced him into exile and in 1924 to settle permanently in Paris. As a painter and decorator he created stage designs for the Opéra-Comique, the Barcelona Opera, and the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan, as well as stage designs for Parisian cabarets of the Folies Bergère and the Sésame cabaret in Monte Carlo. In 1935 he became a member of the Société des Artistes Français and exhibited there. His works are today housed in the Tretyakov Gallery and in the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan.
