The Avro Lancaster was a four-engine heavy bomber primarily used by the Royal Air Force. The design began in the 1930s by aircraft manufacturer Avro and was developed as an improved version of the Avro Manchester. The Lancaster had four engines, compared to two for the Avro Manchester, and was better equipped with machine guns. During World War II the Lancasters flew 156,000 missions and dropped a total of 608,612 tons of bombs. The Lancaster was also responsible for sinking the German battleship Tirpitz.
