Description from the seller
LÉTHÉ - Mixed media: pigment ink print, brush-on varnish applied by hand, for the durable protection of the artwork.
The Winged Victory of Samothrace, wings outstretched, stands upright against a night-blue background. Light falls from above in a single beam, as from a skylight, and comes to strike the shoulder and the drapery. Around her, a dozen red fish circulate unhurriedly, in place of visitors.
The reversal is simple and it carries the whole painting: the most watched monument in the world is rendered in total silence. The marble keeps its momentum, the movement of the drapery continues to rush forward, but there is no one left to see it — except fish, of which orange is the only other color allowed on the canvas.
Dense handling of the blues, built up in successive layers to deepen the depth; the feathers of the wings are detailed stroke by stroke, the drapery worked in whites and gray-greens. The fish are painted cleanly, in impasto, which makes them move toward the viewer.
Mixed media: pigment ink print, brush-on varnish applied by hand, for the durable protection of the artwork.
Varnish applied by hand, for the depth of the blues and the durable protection of the artwork.
Support: premium canvas stretched on a wooden frame, ready to hang.
Format: 60 × 40 cm.
Signed LÉTHÉ · Galerie Labo Joconde / Atelier Joconde · certificate of authenticity provided.
LÉTHÉ is one of the creations bringing together artists Le Yack, Neo Pablo and Popsan within Atelier Joconde, a family studio where three sensibilities coexist: neo-realism, pop and free figuration. Under the name LÉTHÉ, named after the river of forgetfulness in the Greek underworld, the Atelier sinks the figures of Antiquity into water and memory: submerged marbles, underwater lights, impasto and chiaroscuro.
LÉTHÉ gathers gods, muses and antique busts captured at the moment they fade, engulfed, eroded, traversed by the living. The through-line: a dialogue between classical statuary and a contemporary gaze, between what was meant to endure forever and what time carries away, where painterly material enhances and transfigures the printed image.
Each work is a unique piece.
