École italienne (XVII-XVIII) - Saint Jérôme pénitent

Magnificent religious painting of the Italian school, dateable between the 17th and 18th centuries, depicting Saint Jerome in the desert, one of the most characteristic and widespread iconographies of the saint within the European pictorial tradition.

Saint Jerome is portrayed as an old man with a long beard, partially nude and wrapped in his characteristic red cloak, seated in a rocky and solitary landscape while he directs his attention to an open book. This element refers to his condition as a scholar and translator of the Holy Scriptures, while the remote landscape evokes his retreat and life of penance and meditation.

The work presents a composition of notable visual force, in which the intense red of the cloak stands out, contrasting with the dark and earthy tones of the landscape. The treatment of the figure, the lighting and the dramatic atmosphere of the scene recall the Italian late Mannerist and Baroque tradition.

This is a work of great pictorial quality and considerable decorative presence, especially interesting both for its antiquity and for its religious theme and iconography.

The painting shows widespread craquelure, wear, small losses, and various signs typical of its age and conservation history, perfectly appreciable in the photographs. The work has been relined in a previous intervention, probably with the aim of consolidating and preserving the original support.

The work is presented with an attractive later-period gilded frame that perfectly complements the painting and also shows wear, losses, and signs of the passage of time. The frame is included as a gift and is not considered an integral part of the work nor has commercial value, so any possible damage that could occur during transport will not be grounds for a claim.
