ALBA NOX - Mixed media technique: print with pigment ink, varnish brushed by hand applied, for the durable protection of the work.
A woman in a dark dress, a low bun, stands with her back to the viewer before a heavy frame. Inside the frame, a clear figure, faceless, white dress, arms crossed on the chest. The woman's hand, black, rests flat on the surface, exactly at the heart of the other.
The painting reverses the usual relation: it is not the reflection that imitates, but the reflection that radiates. All the light of the canvas is enclosed in the frame, and the real figure is kept on the shadow side.
Pure black and white, worked with a knife in tight scales that catch the light irregularly. The white of the frame is laid on in very thick layers, almost in relief; the blacks are laid in broad smooth planes by contrast.

ALBA NOX is one of the creations bringing together the artists Le Yack, Neo Pablo and Popsan within Atelier Joconde, a family studio where three sensibilities coexist: neo-realism, pop, and free figuration. The Roman numeral refers to 1891, the year Albert Aurier defined symbolism in painting — asserted lineage, not dating of the work. Under the name ALBA NOX, the Atelier gives up all color to keep only black, gray and white, in the symbolist tradition and grisaille in knife technique: material mixed in scales, white impasto in full body, tiny figures lost in dark masses and allegories that refuse to be resolved.
Each work is a unique piece.
