Exceptional Asian textile art piece from the first half of the 20th century (Republic Period), faithfully executed following the sumptuous aesthetic and imperial canons of late Qing Dynasty. It is a large-format natural silk panel rich in symbolism, technical finesse, and extraordinary chromatic splendor.
​Iconography and Cultural Theme: The work exquisitely depicts the iconic celebration of the Duanwu Festival (Dragon Boat Festival). It features four majestic boats with dragon-head prows, where multiple individual rowers are embroidered with textured threads in relief to simulate the scales. On the riverbanks, a lively festive scene is detailed with characters dressed in traditional attire, pagodas, relief stone bridges, willows, and ceremonial elements such as banners, lanterns, and wind instruments.
​High-Couture Craftsmanship and Singular Finishes (Highly Laborious):
​The main canvas is made on delicate natural silk in imperial yellow. The faces of the characters show a classic, highly valued craftsmanship: features and gazes outlined with matte black silk threads that mimic the expressive makeup of traditional Chinese Opera. The yellow silk perimeter is bordered by a delicate floral textile trim applied and sewn entirely by hand, discernible in the meticulous corners finished with artisanal miter joints.
​The work is completed with an elegant burgundy-toned edge and a sumptuous perimetral textile mat made of thick fabric with a complex classic jacquard geometric pattern in bronze and olive green tones.
​The reverse of the textile is perfectly protected with an olive-green protective silk visible through the glass.
