Do-Basin (Navajo Man) - Carl Moon - U.S.

Carl Everton Moon (born October 5, 1878 in Wilmington, Ohio; died June 24, 1948 in San Francisco, California) was an American photographer, book and magazine illustrator, painter, and author with a focus on the Native peoples of North America. He was also described as an imitator of Edward Curtis.

After his six-year training as a photographer in Ohio and West Virginia, he moved in 1903 to Albuquerque, New Mexico and opened his studio. From 1903 to 1907 he took many photographs and oil paintings of Pueblo peoples in his area. In 1907 the Fred Harvey Company hired him at the Grand Canyon under contract, and he left Albuquerque. For Fred Harvey he produced numerous photographs of Native peoples in Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The majority of his photos depict people of the Hopi, Navajo, and Taos Pueblos, but there are also portraits of Osage, Apache, Zuni and other peoples of the Southwest region.

Offered is a print produced for the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles. The image shows a photograph of a Navajo man named "Do-Basin" and was taken in 1906.
