The image is part of McCurry's celebrated documentary work in Afghanistan. It captures a striking, intimate portrait of a worker covered in soot immediately after finishing a grueling 12-hour shift underground. McCurry famously recalled being astonished that despite breathing heavy coal dust all day long with minimal protective equipment, the very first thing the miner did upon resurfacing was light up a cigarette.
