Stained glass window - 16th century

Splendid pane, lead-foil painting, dated 1550, probably Switzerland; the text in the lower part means about the pane: “This pane was commissioned and endowed in the year 1550 by the brothers Hans Conrad and Hans Jacob Hütter from the city of Schaffhausen.” The donor inscriptions at the bottom name the sponsors of the glass pane and document a personal gift. In 16th-century Switzerland it was a established tradition (so-called donation panes) for wealthy citizens, guilds, or officials to donate such magnificent glass paintings for town halls, churches, or private parlors.

The scene depicts a biblical or historical narrative. In the foreground a soldier in antique-looking Roman armor (tunic and laurel wreath) is active, while in the background a figure with an Oriental turban and blue garment is visible.

The pane shows some, partly net-like cracks. The glazing has been repaired over the years with cramp-like cames.

The detailed figural scene, the named donors at the bottom (Hans Cunrad and Hans Jacob) and the fine Schwarzlotmalerei (black enamel painting) are of good craftsmanship.
