AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Significant Augsburg Baroque silver snuff box (Tabatière) with Viennese tax mark from 1802

Object description
High-quality, rectangular silver box with a hinged lid and a fire-gilded interior (vermeil). The lid features a masterfully chased, plastically relief depiction of a mythological scene with putti and a rider. The body is richly decorated all around with relief ornaments, eagle depictions, and antiquising motifs. The gilding on the interior is superbly preserved and originally protected the vessel from oxidation by tobacco.

Punzierung & Datierung

• City assay mark: Augsburg acorn (verified silver, about 13-lot / 812 silver). Manufactured in the 18th century in Augsburg, the leading center of European goldsmith art.
• Repunze / Tax stamp: Viennese free stamp (“Viennese Lily”) from 1802. This historical mark confirms the re-assessment and taxation of the object in the Austrian Empire during the Napoleonic Wars.

Technical data

• Material: Silver (approx. 812/1000, 13 Lot), interior vermeil (fire-gilded)
• Weight: approx. 114 grams
• Era: 18th century (Baroque / Rococo)
• Origin: Germany (Augsburg) / Historic import to Austria (Vienna)
• Condition: Very good, age-appropriate overall condition with a beautiful patina. The hinge closes perfectly. Such a dream piece is very rare to find.
• An ABSOLUTE RARITY RARE COLLECTOR PIECE.
