From Arto:

PERMEKE Paul
Sidford (GB) 1918 - West-Kapelle 1990. Painter, draftsman, self-taught. Son of C. Permeke. Lived for a few years with L. Peire and R. Slabbinck in the painters' community "Het luizengevecht" in Dudzele. Was interned during World War II as a British citizen. From 1937 he painted farm villages, caravans, balls, fairground scenes and incorporated elements of impressionism and expressionism. A short period with surreal scenes recalls Ensor and Chagall. After a stay in Southern Europe his palette became lighter and sunnier. From 1960 his inspiration was mainly found in the polder region and the moving skies, but he also painted the ordinary people, the wanderer, the fisherman, the farmer. Works, among others, in the museums of Antwerp and Ostend.
