Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, became known in 2009 with his sculptures One Dollar, ranking among the ten best sculptors under 30 in the same year according to Artprice. In 2012, the New York publication Farameh named him as one of the fifty best contemporary artists, inspired by traditional American icons, in his book FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art. More recently, in 2016, during the Art Paris Art Fair, the President of the French Republic warmly praised Karl for his impressive two-meter bronze sculpture, One Dollar, exhibited at the Grand Palais.

Karl’s artistic path began at the age of 7 with collage, sparked by meeting sculptor César Baldaccini. He then turned to tagging and graffiti in the Paris metro, remaining passionate about collage. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to fuse his tags with collages. In 2003 Karl prepared his first show in Paris, which led to his first solo exhibition in 2006 at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2008 he returned to Paris with a show combining painting, sculpture and video elements within the Espace Pierre Cardin.

Karl especially loves presenting his works during international exhibitions. In 2011 he was represented by Bel Air Fine Art at the Art Monaco fair with his Cryptogram One creation. The following year he presented his One Dollar works on the theme “In God We Trust” at the Artco France gallery. His 2016 solo show at the Atrium gallery in Marbella, Spain, was inaugurated by the mayor, who praised his works in front of the international press.

In 2010 he was chosen to represent Deauville at the Horsemania world equestrian championship in Lexington, where he created a horse sculpture dedicated to the event. In 2012 he donated to Deauville his Cryptogram One sculpture, a symbolic bronze of peace and love, located at the city’s entrance. In the same year, in collaboration with Corbis, he produced a monumental sculpture for the Cannes Festival, using photographs from 1945 to 2011, autographed by personalities such as Alexandra Lamy and Matthew McConaughey.

The artist gained notoriety in 2009 with his sculptures “One Dollar,” which earned him a ranking by Artprice among the world’s top 10 under-30 sculptors.

In 2017 he was selected to design the trophies for the 43rd American Film Festival. Inspired by “Cryptogramme One,” he created a die-cast aluminum trophy with a mirror finish, bearing messages such as “Hope,” “7e Art,” and “Deauville” on its four sides. For the 46th edition of the Festival in 2020, Karl Lagasse was commissioned to create a new trophy, inspired by an emblematic Deauville symbol: the sketch of the barriers that separate the cabines on the Planches.

In 2016, France Culture mentioned Karl in an article about his monumental installation, A Piece of Heaven on Earth, blending a Maserati wrapped in white plastic and a statue of Jesus surrounded by dollar-shaped sculptures, symbolizing human debt. This work was presented at the Art Paris Art Fair 2015 in collaboration with Maserati. In 2017 he created the Trophy for the Deauville American Film Festival, inspired by his Cryptogramme One and adding messages such as “Hope” and “7e Art” to the trophies.
