Description from the seller
MiLo (1976), Netherlands – Red Totem
A bold figurative composition built from large, simplified shapes and strong contrasts. A monumental black figure dominates the surface, intersected by a vivid red vertical form that creates a strong visual axis through the painting.
The face and body are reduced to a small number of expressive elements, giving the work an almost symbolic or totemic quality. The pale, weathered background softens the graphic intensity of the black and red while adding warmth and texture. Small details in white, blue and ochre introduce subtle shifts within the otherwise restrained palette.
The deliberately irregular contours and direct painterly handling give the work a spontaneous, primitive-modern character, somewhere between abstraction, portraiture and visual symbolism.
