CICADAE. - 1565

Woodcut depiction of cicadas drawn by Giorgio Liberale da Udine and carved by Wolfang Meyerpeck for the 1565 edition of the famous herbarium by Pietro Andrea Mattioli entitled "De i discorsi di m. Pietro Andrea Matthioli sanese, medico cesareo", a work on which generations of apothecaries, botanists and physicians have formed, in which part of the second book is devoted to some animals.

The cicadas, certainly tied to the world of plants on which they perch to chirp in the hot summers, are illustrated and described not with a zoological intent, but a medical one, so much so that already the subtitle reads "Cicadae, quae inassatae manduntur, vesicae doloribus prosunt", i.e. "cicadas eaten roasted, benefit those with bladder pains".

The sheet has a beautiful and uniform coloration of fairly recent manufacture and presents excellent preservation.
