Woodcut dedicated to the snails drawn by Giorgio Liberale from Udine and engraved by Wolfang Meyerpeck for the 1604 edition of the famous herbarium by Pietro Andrea Mattioli entitled “De i discorsi di m. Pietro Andrea Matthioli sanese, medico cesareo,” a work on which generations of apothecaries, botanists and physicians have been formed, in which part of the second book is devoted to some animals.
About the snails it is told that they are very well known, of vastly different sizes, of varying taste depending on which herbs they feed on and where they live, between sea, land or rivers. They can be exceedingly bitter, smell of mud, or be very tasty if they eat fragrant herbs.
However, ample space is given to the description of their medicamental virtues, which depend on the manner of preparation; for example, taken from the shell and cooked in orzata, they ease chest pains; used as a plague in vinegar, they stop nosebleeds. Likewise, when the shells are burnt, they cure scabies, vitiligo and teeth.
The representation seeks to convey the idea of a snail, showing two with their shell and two empty shells, so as to see the form of the inner spiral or hollow.
The sheet has a beautiful, homogeneous coloration of fairly recent manufacture and its condition is excellent.
