In good condition for the age of the work.
There is a small pouch at the back with reproductions of similar works, a photo and an old postcard. Also on the back of the canvas is stamped the number 10, which possibly corresponds to the number of an old collection or auction.
Provenance: Private Madrid collection.
The Franc of Bruges Room in the former Palace of Liberty of Bruges (Brugse Vrije) is known for its splendid carved wood decoration. In particular, the exquisite work surrounding the large fireplace, designed by Lancelot Blondeel (1498-1561) and executed around 1527 by Guyot de Beauregard (died 1551). In the carvings are depicted Charles V, Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian I, Charles I of Burgundy and Margaret of York, his third wife. They are surrounded by several coats of arms including those of Burgundy and Spain.
The room has attracted the attention of several painters who have represented it on several occasions, with Heinrich Anton Heger (1832-1888) being the one who has dedicated his panel paintings to it the most times. However, the painting we present is not signed, so we do not know who its author was.
