In good condition for the age of the work.
There is a small pouch on the back with reproductions of similar works by the same author and some adhesive labels with numbers that probably correspond to antique auctions.
Provenance: Madrid private collection.
The work depicts an elegant full-length woman with an ornate hat and a dark coat against a gardened background with a street lamp, a tree, and a sculpture.
The artist produced several paintings with a similar composition, featuring one or two figures occupying the center of a composition in which the vertical dimension dominates over the horizontal.
Guillermo Gómez Gil was a painter associated with Andalusian costumbrismo. Trained at the San Telmo School of Fine Arts in Málaga, he had teachers of the caliber of Muñoz Degrain, among others. His main production was directed toward seascapes, although he also addressed costumbrist themes such as the present painting. His work is represented in major public collections such as the Prado Museum, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga, the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville, the Málaga Municipal Heritage Museum, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau (France).
