Giovanni Maria Mossa (1896-1973) - Santa Rosa da Lima

A figure of great importance in Christian tradition, depicted with vivid details and a color palette that conveys serenity and devotion, Saint Rose of Lima was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X and is the patron saint of Peru, her country of origin. From early childhood she had visions. Inspired by the Blessed Virgin Mary, she changed her name to Rosa de Santa Maria.
Her life, spent at her father's house in penance and humility, was tested by great sorrows, adversities, and illnesses: a series of truce periods and spiritual battles she always faced strengthened by prayer.
Her ideal of Christian perfection was Saint Catherine of Siena, and in 1608 she joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic. She subjected herself to constant harsh penances, and roses became for her an integral part of her sufferings.
It is said she cultivated them to weave crowns of thorns that she wore all her life, causing her to bleed. She would then gather the roses, toss them up to her Lord, and they would arrange themselves into a cross, thus indicating God’s gratitude for her love and devotion.
Spines and roses are a constant in the hagiography of saints. In Subiaco, Saint Benedict is depicted mortifying himself by rolling among the thorns, and Saint Francis, before receiving the stigmata, threw himself into a thorny bush. This turned into roses and even today in Assisi, at the Porziuncola, a plant of roses without thorns is shown.
It is no coincidence that Saint Rose took that name: “Mystic Rose” is said to be the Virgin Mary.
She died young, Rosa, at just over thirty, in 1617.
