A beautiful and characteristic female portrait by Augusto Rodrigues, one of the most important Brazilian draftsmen and art educators of the 20th century. The work features the loose, expressive, and sensitive line that marks the artist’s mature production, with predominance of pinkish tones, grays, and touches of blue, green, and orange. The elongated face, the intense gaze, and the decorative elements (flowers/adornments) are typically his.
Augusto Rodrigues, known as “the painter of women” (a designation given by poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade), was a painter, draftsman, engraver, caricaturist, photographer, poet, and, above all, the founder of the Escolinha de Arte do Brasil (1948), a pioneering movement in art education that spread across the country and Latin America. A friend of Portinari and Guignard, he participated in the 2nd São Paulo Biennial (1953) and received the Prize for Travel Abroad at the National Salon of Modern Art in the same year.
The work is framed with a passe-partout (visible surrounding measurements approximately 20 x 18 cm – to be confirmed precisely). Overall good condition, with the natural characteristics of the support and technique (pastel).
