With this vertically formatted work, Medsan brings Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Unit 01 — the purple and green mecha imagined by Hideaki Anno — into a scene of a Japanese print in the ukiyo-e tradition. The composition directly cites Hokusai’s famous Views of Bridges from various provinces, those wooden bridges spanning gorges, and the autumn with blazing maples that Hiroshige captured forever. In the upper right, the cartouche メドサン signs the scene as a Edo-era board would caption a print.

Squatting on a still-suspended beam, the giant places one hand flat on the wood, the other folded against his flank, the red eye looking down. Beneath him, five carpenters in period dress maneuver poles, ropes, and planks to launch the arch over the torrent, without looking up. The palette stages the confrontation: the mecha’s purple and acid green against the vermilion of the maples, the ochre of the timbers, and the blue-gray of the cascade. The stone lanterns and the path climbing on the left open the space, while the diagonal of the beam guides the eye from the giant to the tiny men.

Everything unfolds in this mutual indifference: the absolute weapon of the end of the world shares the worksite with artisans who, themselves, are building. The scale speaks of threat, the posture of rest; the bridge, meanwhile, remains what connects — two eras, two imaginaries, the same mountain. Medsan sets in place a truce rather than a battle.
