MEDSAN - Kaiju vs Gundam (巨人対怪獣) - UNIQUE WORK

With this square-format artwork, Medsan calls forth two absolute totems of Japanese culture and makes them face off in a single image: Godzilla, the kaiju born at Toho in 1954, and the RX-78-2 Gundam by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the founder mecha of Mobile Suit Gundam. The duel is embedded in the visual vocabulary of ukiyo-e prints, with waves crested with foam inherited from Hokusai and stylized cloud scrolls. The image simulates a repoussé copper panel, a hammered plate from which the figures would seem to emerge from the metal—a matter-based citation, entirely constructed by the print run. The red cartouche 巨人対怪獣 (“the giant versus the monster”) and the signature メドサン close the composition at the bottom right, like a print seal.

Godzilla occupies the left half, standing out of the surf, jaws open, dorsal spines blazing in electric blue that runs to the tip of the tail coiled in the foreground. Facing him, the Gundam stands with legs apart in the water, left fist armed, sabre raised vertically—a blue diagonal that exactly mirrors the blue of the spines and extends across the surface. Between them, the bay and its skyline in flames, overturned ships, a city reduced to a background setting: Medsan selects a nearly monochrome palette of copper tones and oxidized browns, from which only the blue and red of the cartouche escape. The monster’s tail sweeps the bottom of the frame and brings the eye back to the center, where the two bodies do not yet touch.

This mashup speaks to Japan’s long conversation with its own monsters: Godzilla, atomic memory of 1954, against the Gundam, a man-piloted machine, post-war technological promise. By freezing them in the language of the print, Medsan treats them as two deities of a modern pantheon, on par with the dragons and samurai of Edo-era leaves. The city burns behind them, indifferent to who will win.
