With this square-format work, Medsan plants the Stargate in the middle of a desert, the ring of the Stargate franchise born from Roland Emmerich's 1994 film and then the Stargate SG-1 series, right in the middle of a desert where a dromedary passes. The great symbol of science fiction ends up stranded in a landscape of sand and rocks, treated in the vein of 19th-century Orientalist paintings. It is the logic of the series “Arcade in real life” applied to the Stargate: the icon leaves its universe and finds itself living, off-screen, the slow pace of ordinary life. The cartouche メドサン signs the work in the bottom right corner.

The ring almost fills the height of the composition, half-buried, its glyphs carved and its seven red chevrons still perfectly readable on the gray-blue metal. In front of it, a split stone staircase descends into the dune, the only remnant of a ceremonially accessible entrance, while rock formations close the frame on the right. The dromedary, minuscule relative to the portal, advances without giving it a glance: the void at the center of the ring shows no vortex, only sky. The palette chosen by Medsan — sand, ivory, mauve shadows, a thin line of gold on the horizon — establishes a late-afternoon light that reduces the machine to a monument.

What this juxtaposition says is simple and dizzying: the technology capable of linking galaxies has become a ruin that the desert covers, and the only living witness pays it no heed. Medsan reverses the franchise’s elsewhere-ness by pinning it to the ground, somewhere between Shelley’s Ozymandias and the ruins overgrown by nature. Wonder shifts sides: it is no longer the door that astonishes, but the silence around it.
