With this square-format piece, Medsan brings a Star Wars TIE Fighter hunter into a cascade of Japanese prints. The composition borrows its vocabulary from sumi-e and Hokusai’s landscapes, especially the series “Cascades of the Different Provinces,” where water falls straight down like a white column between two cliffs. The indigo tonal range, the red cartouche in the top left, and the Me-do-san seal in the bottom right complete the scene within the ukiyo-e grammar.

Two travelers cross a suspended bridge above the void: one wearing a straw hat, the other with a staff in hand, minuscule before the fall. Under them, the imperial hunter streaks along the curtain of water at ground level and fires a green shot, the only bold color besides the red cartouche in a landscape entirely blue. The twisted pines clinging to the rock, the white-water swirls, and the clouds outlined with a single flowing line are those of the print; the composition, built on the vertical of the waterfall and the diagonal of the shot, guides the eye from the bridge to the pool. The entire image imitates ink wash and watercolor washes, even to the splashes that seem to spill outside the frame.

The mashup rests on a precise irony: the two walkers don’t even turn around. The most recognizable war machine of popular culture crosses a world that ignores it, and it is the landscape—the water, the rock, the pines—that keeps the last word. Medsan revisits what Japanese prints already did, showing the tiny human in vast nature, and slips in a contemporary icon without breaking the balance.
