With this square-format artwork, Medsan conjures the DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future right in the middle of a Japanese rain-themed print. The composition directly cites the landscape ukiyo-e, that of Hiroshige with his oblique rains in his Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (here, Evoking the Edo landscape), and adopts the aizuri-e approach, the print entirely rendered in indigo blues. The red cartouche at the top left announces the title in the manner of an Edo publisher, and the red seal メドサン signs the work at the bottom right.

The scene reads in depth: terraced rice fields unfold in wide concentric curves to the valley floor, a thatched-roof farmhouse and its dawn wheel stand to the right, and four peasants in conical hats ascend the dam under a pounding rain. Along the central embankment the car rolls by, its door open, leaving behind two trails of orange flame which are the only heat in the image and reflect in the water of the plots. The showers become white hatchings crossing the frame, the clouds curl into spirals, the pines in the foreground form masses of nearly black ink. Everything is held in a blue-tone palette set on a light background that imitates old paper, and the eye travels from the stormy sky down to this incandescent groove.

The mashup plays with time itself: the time-travel machine is caught red-handed arriving in a Japan before the machine, where soil is still tilled by hand. The peasants, however, do not turn around — the future passes, the rice paddy remains. This indifference is the true subject of the work.

A piece that is both narrative and contemplative, ideal for adding a pop yet literate touch to a collector’s interior devoted to cinema as much as to prints. The buyer receives a giclee print on canvas, a pigment-printed artwork numbered 1/1, hand-signed: a single copy in the world.
